Navigating life in the spotlight is no laughing matter.
In fact, it's something Ali Wong is still figuring out, especially after the success of her hit show Beef. Fame has also brought a whole new level of attention to the comedian's private world, including her relationship with Bill Hader.
"It's so weird. I can't even explain it," Wong recently told Variety about being in the public eye. "I have never, ever been snapped by paparazzi until this year."
"I was talking to someone recently and they said, 'I think it's so alarming when it happens because you feel like you've been caught when really, you're not doing anything wrong,'" she recalled. "It was someone giving me, in hindsight, advice about their former relationship with a famous person. They had spent so much energy hiding, and that defined the whole relationship. That's still staying with me, and it's quite an adjustment."
And it's not just an adjustment for Wong—her mom also follows entertainment news.
"I haven't even discussed it with her, but that must be so surreal for her," the stand-up star said. "I'm trying to get used to it."
Although, stardom hasn't been all bad as Wong—who'd already become a big name through her Netflix specials and performance in Always Be My Maybe—noted she's been getting more calls and offers following Beef. And after acting in the series, she's excited to be back on her comedy tour.
"It feels good," the actress told the outlet. "It's nice because a lot personally has happened in the past year. I'm not single now, but I was single for a long time after I got divorced. It was so compelling to talk about my life as a single woman. When practicing, I was in the habit of talking as if I was still single. What's strange is now [my romantic life] is public information. For me, stand-up is still an abstraction of truth—it does not represent the whole me. Out of respect for my relationship, I have to practice putting them in the past tense."
Wong announced her divorce from Justin Hakuta—with whom she shares two children—in April 2022. She started sparking romance rumors with Hader after the split, with the two fueling dating speculation at the end of last year. Then in April 2023, the Barry actor confirmed he and the Baby Cobra alum are dating again.
"My girlfriend and I were just figuring out that I haven't had a vacation in 10 years," Hader—who has three kids from his former marriage to Maggie Carey—told Collider. "I went with her to San Francisco, but that doesn't really count. So, I'm going to have a vacation."
